Tale of the Gumiho

"Fox Sister"

Once upon a time, a married couple with only three sons finally gave birth to a daughter.
The couple truly adored their daughter.


One day, after a few years passed, something strange started to occur! The cows raised by the family would die every night.
So the father told the eldest son to guard the cows at night.


The eldest son kept watch on the cows every night.
One night, he saw his little sister turn into a fox and eat the liver of a cow!


The next day, the eldest son told his father what he saw.
However, his father didn't believe him and was furious that he would accuse
his precious daughter of such a horrible deed and kicked him out.


After the son was kicked out, he made a visit to a Do wielder and started training.
Years passed, and just as the eldest son was about to return home, the Do wielder handed him three special bottles.


However, when he returned home, no one was to be found. All he saw were bones on the floor.
He found his little sister had eaten up the entire family.
The son ran away, but his little sister soon chased after him.


When he opened the lid of the white bottle the Do wielder had given him,
brambles appeared and started to attack the sister.
Then, he was able to defeat his little sister with the waves of the blue bottle
and the flames of the red bottle. His little sister turned out to be a Gumiho, an evil fox.


A Gumiho is known as an evil fox that can transform into a human and has the power to possess humans.
They appear in other folklore.
